AT&T FILM AWARDS

The winners of the 2018 SHAPE edition of the AT&T Film Awards were announced Saturday, June 2, by David Christopher, President of AT&T Mobility and Entertainment, and Ava DuVernay, writer, director, producer. The biggest twist? A three-way tie for winner in the Emerging Filmmaker category, with all three filmmakers taking home a $20,000 prize.
Ava DuVernay is a writer, producer, director and distributor of independent film. She is the director of Selma, which chronicles the historic 1965 voting rights campaign led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Most recently her critically acclaimed feature-length documentary, 13th was released on Netflix. The documentary explores the history of racial inequality in the United States, focusing on the nation's prison system. 13th was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary, and won 4 Emmy Awards out of its 8 nominations.
DuVernay previously wrote, produced and directed the dramatic feature, Middle of Nowhere, which earned her the 2012 Sundance Film Festival Best Director Award. In 2010, she wrote, financed, produced and directed her first narrative feature, I Will Follow. The family drama was hailed by critic Roger Ebert as "one of the best films I've seen about the loss of a loved one."
DuVernay made her directorial debut with the critically-acclaimed 2008 hip hop documentary, This Is the Life. She has since directed several network documentaries, including Venus Vs for ESPN. In 2013, she directed a sweeps episode of ABC's top-rated Scandal, as well as acclaimed fashion and beauty films for Fashion Fair and Prada.
Prior to filmmaking, DuVernay worked as a marketer and publicist for 14 years. Her award-winning firm provided strategy and execution for more than 120 film and television campaigns for acclaimed directors such as Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Michael Mann, and Bill Condon.
A graduate of UCLA, DuVernay is the founder of ARRAY, a community-based distribution collective dedicated to the amplification of films by people of color and women filmmakers. She is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, as well as the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. She sits on the board of both Film Independent and the Sundance Institute. She was named one of TIME magazine's "100 Most Influential People" of 2017. DuVernay is based in Los Angeles.

David’s scope covers AT&T Mobility & Entertainment profitability, strategy and business development, research, pricing, customer acquisition and retention, product development, marketing, advertising and media deployment, and merchandising for over 5,000 exclusive AT&T stores and 4,500 Cricket Wireless stores.
His team’s focus to develop products, offers, and integrated solutions across wireless, video, and high-speed internet brings together the worlds of technology, media and telecommunications. He also oversees the award-winning AT&T Developer Program, which provides developers and content creators with APIs, tools, and training to build innovative applications and entertainment experiences on the AT&T world-class network and distribution platforms.
David previously served as Chief Marketing Officer of AT&T Entertainment Group, Chief Marketing Officer of AT&T Mobility, and Vice President of Product Management for AT&T’s legacy mobility brand, Cingular Wireless.
Before joining AT&T, he was Vice President, Product Marketing and Management at Palm, with responsibility for all Palm-branded product lines worldwide. He also worked for Apple Computer’s Claris software division, and began his career with Sara Lee Corporation in Barcelona, Spain and Gent, Belgium.
He is a board member and past chairman of the Ad Council, the nation’s largest producer of public service advertising to combat pressing social issues. He also serves on the boards of Otter Media, a joint venture between AT&T and Peter Chernin, and CTIA which represents the U.S. wireless communications industry.
David holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia and earned his Master of Business Administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University.
