Recap: AT&T Create-a-thon in New York featuring shorts with a new twist on popular cultural themes
On St. Patrick’s Day, the AT&T Developer Program kicked off our first 2017 New York event: AT&T Create-a-thon – New York! We flew across the country to check out the city that never sleeps and challenged filmmakers to create a short film over a weekend. New Yorkers didn’t disappoint! We had over 100 creators come out to Primary in the Financial District to attend the event.
Eric Lau of Solar Film/Video Productions was the featured speaker for the Create-a-thon kick-off. Eric imparted some useful advice to participants such as having a backup plan and being flexible if something isn’t working and use it as an opportunity to tell a creative or new story.
On Saturday, teams filmed on location all over New York City. We were able to catch up with a few teams to get some behind the scenes sneak peeks. Some teams were filming outside in the snow, others were inside working with lighting setups, and while some groups were grabbing coffee en route from one location to the next. Teams were at all different stages and it was so much fun to get a glimpse at their process.
After a long weekend of filming and editing, films were submitted on Sunday afternoon. We screened all the submissions and it was wonderful to watch the diversity of films entered. During the judging deliberations, the films that had a creative story/perspective or had a twist on a classic story came out on top. Keep reading to find out who won!
